I saw a child who couldn't walk, sit on a horse, laugh and talk. Then ride it through a field of daisies and yet he could not walk unaided. I saw a child, no legs below, sit on a horse and make it go. Through woods of green and places he had never been, to sit and stare, except from a chair. I saw a child who could only crawl, mount a horse and sit up tall. Put it through degrees of paces and laugh at the wonder in our faces. I saw a child born into strife, take up and hold the reins of life. And that same child, I heard him say "Thank God for showing me the way!" |
Equest Special Riders has got a new webmaster. Jeff is a professional webmaster and his company has brought skill, lots of cool software and a neat new look to the Equest Special Riders web site. The new web site he has designed and his company hosts lets non-tech Special Riders staff add content to the web site too. Jeff has shown us what a real webmaster can do.

Linda Williams is taking the helm as newsletter editor for Equest Special Riders. She will be starting with quarterly editions of the newsletter. Look for an on-line edition to it as well. Thanks Linda. If you have suggestions or something for the newsletter you can notify Linda through this web site e-mail, leave it in the pay box at the riding barn or catch her at a board meeting.
Equest Special Riders is looking for a new Treasurer as Larry Bona is resigning after six years as Treasurer. He will remain involved with Equest Special Riders and will help the new Treasurer come on board when Equest Special Riders finds one. Anyone know of someone who would like to fill this post? Much thanks to Larry for his service to Equest Special Riders as our Treasurer.
Yes, Equest Special Riders has settled in to its new location at 2004 174th St. East. Enter onto 174th St East via 22nd Ave E next to the fire department on 176th Street and 22nd Ave E. Our new location is one Equest Special Riders had it's eye on several years ago and will allow a more flexible riding schedule for us.
Hello,
This request comes to you on behalf of persons currently being assisted by Equest as well as those our organization will help in the future.
Equest Special Riders, Inc. is a non-profit organization of trained volunteers who provide therapeutic-recreational horseback and pony riding and instruction for persons left physically or mentally dysfunctional through irregularities of birth, high fevers, disease or trauma from an accident. A few students are adults; the greatest majority of the Special Riders are children. Children, who might never have walked, enjoy a chance to experience the exhilaration of moving freely, mounted atop a horse or pony. While riders are involved in specialized games designed to improve coordination, the horses' gait massages their leg muscles. You need only watch one session to realize how much riding impacts the self-confidence and well being of the students.
As a result of increased demand, Volunteers carry heavier work loads. Three or more volunteers are needed to ensure the safety of one rider. In addition to the important "hands-on" volunteers, are those of us who work behind the scene feeding horses, grooming ponies, making posters, sewing banners, silk screening shirts, planning fund raisers to maintain low cost rides, typing, bookkeeping, stuffing envelopes, writing publicity articles, applying for grants and training other volunteers. Some volunteers work only at special events or for specific jobs. Others schedule an hour or more on a weekly or monthly basis.
Is it possible that you or someone in your family or circles of friends might be able to squeeze a little time from a busy schedules to offer us a hand? If you can mix a cup of hot chocolate, bake a cookie, lead a horse, run an errand or snap a picture, make a phone call, or stuff an envelope, you are needed.
We continue to volunteer because we have seen how much the program helps the riders and because there are few things more rewarding than sharing the joy exhibited by the Special Riders when they are mounted on Equest horses or ponies. Still, no amount of dedication can replace the sheer need of more persons to assist us. What might seem like an insignificant few minutes to you would be greatly appreciated by the Riders.
Contact our Volunteer Coordinators Sandra and Roy Mc Clendon today (at address or phone below) and arrange to schedule your volunteer-time.
